The Gateway Guardians have their roots in St. Louis of the 1930's, as a group formed to help those in need, simply because it was the right thing to do. Loosely organized through their churches, these strong young men and generous young women gave their time and effort to help those around them, for no more reward than the sense of satisfaction it gave them.
It wasn't until the late 1940's that the Gateway Guardians as we know them were formed by a wartime hero who called himself Captain Strong. He led the first collection of super-heroes in St. Louis, and started the group's long history of fighting paranormal crime. The group stood strong until the mid-1960's, when it lost cohesion and the heroes went their own separate ways.
The group remained an entry in the history books until 1997, when The New Lioness came forward, having studied tomes of magic left to her by her grandmother, the original Lioness. The New Lioness built a remarkable team of heroes, who showed that strong women could keep up with any evil to come their way, and that heroism was not dead.
They had ample time to prove this when the aliens attacked in late 2000.
This group fought tirelessly against the invading aliens, with many great successes... and losses. By the time the alien menace had been driven away, there was only four members remaining, and two of those were retired or reserve members. The American Sentinels, based in Chicago, had also lost many members, and suggested the two groups combine. The two remaining active members decided to join that group and continue their work.
Six years later one of the reserve members who had not become involved with the other group decided that St. Louis needed protection of its own. They formed a new team to watch out for the common citizen of St. Louis.
